How many hives are on the farm?
There are 14 hives dotted across Toad Hollow Farm to date. Between 20,000 and 60,000 bees live in a single hive. The queen works hard to keep the numbers up, laying up to 1,500 eggs per day.
What types of bees are there? How many bee species exist?
At Toad Hollow Farm, we have both Italian and Russian queen species making some of the most delicious honey in Indiana. There are over 4,000 native bee species in the US, with the first honey bees brought over by settlers from Europe. Interested in learning more about native bee species? what happens to the bees over the winter?
Bee species behave differently during the winter months. While bumble bees hibernate, honey bees stay alert and work to keep the hive safe and warm. We always leave plenty of honey in the hives in the late fall months to ensure the hardworking hive has enough resources to get them through the colder months.
